Girls Inc. Week 2022
Every year we look forward to celebrating Girls Inc. Week, when affiliates across the network engage girls in similar activities and invite external audiences to amplify the messaging and conversations related to the theme. This year, we are particularly excited about this opportunity for affiliates to educate the new generations of leaders, their supporters and communities about Title IX and gender equity. Title IX is the United States federal civil rights law that prohibits sex discrimination (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, and gender identity) in any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. As with every Girls Inc. Week, this is an opportunity to lift up girls’ voices. However, many girls today are not familiar with Title IX, the rights they have, or how things were before Title IX was passed. There is a big opportunity to educate girls about Title IX and spark an intergenerational dialogue. It’s important for today’s girls to understand the significance of the law so they can help keep it strong, protect it from attacks, and elect leaders who support it. June 23, 2022 will mark the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX of the Education Amendment Act of 1972. Surviving many challenges through the decades, Title IX is arguably one of the most significant laws for gender equality in America’s history. Girls Inc. will celebrate Title IX throughout 2022 as we recognize the great progress the law has made while acknowledging the challenges that remain.
